To aid in the selection of participants in these events, the UKMA has introduced its own ranking system, the Mahjong UK Ranking System (MUKRS). This is an evolution of the Mahjong European Ranking System (MERS) used by the European Mahjong Association (EMA).

It uses the same tournament result data as MERS, pulling this data from the EMA website. This means UK players need an EMA ID and to compete in a registered EMA tournament before they will appear in MUKRS.

Note, in addition to MUKRS, to be eligible for selection players must have participated, as a UK representative, in a minimum of sixteen days of MERS tournament play in the three years preceding the Selection Date. A minimum of four such MERS tournament days must have been outside the UK and a minimum of four days within the UK.

For more details on the background to MUKRS, see the “Selection of UK Participants for Limited Access Tournaments” post dated June 2026.

Since MUKRS is an evolution of MERS, let’s start by recapping how MERS works:

MERS (Mahjong European Ranking System)

In MERS, your performance at each tournament is recorded as a value between 0 and 1000. The winner of the tournament gets 1000, last place gets 0, and every other position is evenly spaced.

For example: if you finish 32nd out of 60, then you beat 28 out of your 59 opponents. 28 divided by 59 is 0.475, so your MERS result would be 475.

Weights

Every tournament has a weight, which is applied to the results. This is typically between 1 and 6.

Result decay

Results older than a year have their weight halved. Results older than two years no longer count.

Minimum participation

To give a representative ranking, MERS has a minimum participation of 5 tournaments. Players with fewer than 5 results are given placeholder results until they have 5 results. Each of these placeholder results is a 0 (corresponding to last place) with weight 1.

The two parts of the MERS ranking

A player’s MERS ranking is calculated in two parts. These parts are both weighted averages of certain sub-selections of your results.

‘Weighted average’ means multiplying each result by its weight and summing the results, before finally dividing by the sum of the weights. Thus, results with a higher weight count more.

Part A – Your consistency

Part A is the weighted average of all of your results.

However, a player with at least 10, 15, 20… results can leave their worst 1, 2, 3… results out of this calculation.

Part B – Your achievements

Part B is the weighted average of your four best results.

The MERS ranking

A player’s final MERS ranking is the average of their Part A and Part B.

An explanation of MUKRS

MUKRS aims to resemble and iterate on MERS.

MUKRS results

Upon completing a tournament, your performance is recorded as a set of results that contribute to your MUKRS ranking. The results have a value equal to the player’s base rank (0 to 1000) at the tournament, as defined by MERS.

The key difference from MERS is that the results are unweighted.

Instead, the result is duplicated until there are as many results as there are days in the tournament.

Open events only

Only open events count toward MUKRS.
